On October 2nd, Southeast Missouri State University invited Wyman’s Teen Leadership Program teens and their families to see General Colin Powell speak in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. A number of teens took advantage of the once in a lifetime chance to hear the retired statesman deliver a speech entitled “Diplomacy: Persuasion, Trust and Values.”
Gen. Powell’s inspiring words resonated deeply. During his speech, he captivated them with his humorous and relevant discussion of leadership and the importance of education. They expressed awe at the perseverance which took Gen. Powell from a first-generation college student to Secretary of State and the first African American on the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“I really liked hearing Colin Powell speak. He encourages young people to start investing in their tomorrows early on because we as young people represent the future leaders of tomorrow,” said TLP teen Lauren S., “He restated how important it is to always do your best and realize that anything is possible.”

This once in a lifetime opportunity was made available to Wyman teens by Trent Ball, Associate Dean of Students at Southeast Missouri State University. Thank you Trent and Southeast for the invitation!
